6.2 Understanding the relative size and distance between the Earth, the moon and the Sun.
Lesson 2: How Far and How Big
In this lesson, pupils will discover why certain planets do not support life. They will be also aware of the relative ditance fom the earth to the Sun compared to the relative distance from the Earth to the Moon.
The Sun is one hundred times the sizes of Earth.
Earth is four times the size of the Moon.
Size | Ratio |
Moon | 1 |
Earth | 4 |
Sun | 400 |
The Sun is 1392000 km in the diameter.
The Moon is about 384400km away from the Earth.
Sun | Earth | Moon |
1. Biggest object in the Solar system 2. About 100 times bigger than the earth 3. Very much farther from the earth | 1. A lot smaller than the Sun 2. About 4 times bigger than the Moon 3. About 400 times farther from the Sun than it is from the Moon | 1. Smaller than the Earth 2. Closer to the earth |
